I know I was turning in laps on a wet Sepang circuit with slick tires that shouldn't have been possible. You seem to be able to drive far quicker on a wet track with slick tires than you should have any right to be able to, although there are reports that this only happens in qualifying. WTF Codemasters? Sometimes AI cars won't make their mandatory pitstop during races, and in the shorter races they rubberband often. The laptimes of your competitors in qualifying races don't actually correspond to the actual cars on track, so you can follow someone or overtake them and yet they're actually lapping faster than you. Being held by your pit crew until it’s safe is also a PITA, but true to life. Going into the pits, other cars ghost straight through you, and therefore make it out ahead of you, which is unacceptable. There's also some slowdown at the first corner when 24 cars are being rendered at once. The main one of these is the frame stutter that happens every time you drive past the start-finish line, regardless of track. The lack of an F1 game for the past eight years means you'll probably have to learn all of the tracks from scratch, and until you know the track layout well enough to lap metronomically, fiddling with car setup is a bit pointless.Įarlier I said that the graphics were excellent, with exceptions.
F1 2010 PC REVIEW DRIVER
Driving an F1 car is hard! Yes, with the help of F1 driver Anthony Davidson, Codemasters has made the game accessible to many more players than something like iRacing or Grand Prix Legends, but trying to get an F1 car around a virtual Spa or Monaco isn't child's play, nor should it be. The game won’t let you cheat, either: cutting corners and dangerous driving all gets punished by the stewards, with time penalties, grid spot penalties, and drive throughs, just like the real thing. There's a noticeable difference between the option and prime tire choices, and all the 2010 F1 tracks are present and correct (which is more than can be said about the actual Korean circuit. The default career races are 20 percent of actual race distance, preceded by an hour of practice and then one 20-minute qualifying session. Faithful to the sportĪs an F1 experience, it's quite faithful. You can adjust engine mapping or front wing settings-and maybe F duct if you develop one-on the fly during races, but you need three hands to do so, even with the wheel. You can change the driving aids on the fly too, which comes in handy if you've been too brave.

There's enough granularity in the driver aids to find a competitive setup traction control, ABS, an adaptive racing line, braking aid-it's all there, and you can pick and choose. I somehow managed to win my very first race, but this was soon rectified with a mediocre finish in Australia, and I don't even want to talk about Malaysia Races are fun, even when you're at the back, which you will be when you start Career mode. Being able to turn into the corner while braking is vital at a number of corners, but you can't turn if your wheels are locked up. The most important driving tip I can offer is this: brake early! Much earlier than you think you should, even with the racing line on. After playing an equal amount of time with both the controller and a wheel, I think the wheel is the way to go, as it lets you adjust your line better in decreasing radius corners.

If you can drive a fast racecar in Forza or Gran Turismo, you'll be OK playing F1 2010. It's no good having great sound and graphics if it’s no fun to actually play, or if the physics model doesn't seem realistic, a complaint I have with GRiD, where the cars seem to pivot and steer from the center. Looking a very long way down the track through the next corner is essential for getting a good lap. Making out braking points, turn in points, and all the rest proved tricky, and I now use the view from the camera mounted on the airbox so that I can place the car in the corners properly.

Using the cockpit view gives me new appreciation for just how good F1 drivers are. One of my fears was that, like GRiD and DiRT, the graphics would be too dark, making it tough to pick out the track. The visual highlights are most apparent when it rains water builds up on the screen, obscuring your view, and following one or more cars means trying desperately to see through the spray. It doesn't look bad either, with a few notable exceptions. All that's missing is the smell of rubber, burnt hydrocarbons, track food, and suntan lotion. The sounds made by 24 virtual cars bounce off grandstands or buildings in the same way they do at an actual F1 race after playing for several hours I could hear the high-pitched scream of the engine ringing in my ears.
